Following the reintroduction of 100 ml liquid rules on cabin baggage for passengers travelling through UK airports due to an outstanding regulatory restriction, Birmingham Airport has launched temporary measures to help ease the process for passengers. The measures follow reports that hundreds of holidaymakers were left stranded outside the air transport hub after new restrictions were put into place regarding liquid in hand luggage.

Despite airports including Birmingham having invested in new CT scanning equipment to increase the limit of liquids in hand luggage from 100 ml to two litres in line with new regulations introduced at the beginning of June, the limit on only carrying containers of 100 ml or less of liquids, pastes and gels was reintroduced by the Government in UK airports on 9 June.

To help passengers pass through the airport’s security this summer, Birmingham is opening an enlarged temporary structure providing multiple “liquid check stations” to ensure that passengers comply with new government regulations introduced earlier in June. The facility will be staffed by third party customer service specialists who will check that customers comply with temporary liquid rules for cabin baggage.

Commenting on the new measures, Nick Barton, Birmingham Airport’s CEO, said: “They are designed to give  passengers a smoother and easier experience through security. Our enlarged teams will be on hand to explain the new liquid rules, we all have to comply with and help passengers prepare for security. The more we can do together to reduce the number of bags that don’t comply with these rules, the more we can reduce queues at security screening.”

He also reminded passengers: “As always, our advice is to only turn up when your airline has advised and remember that only containers of 100 ml, or less, of liquids, pastes and gels can be carried in cabin luggage.”

Since the 100 ml liquid restrictions were introduced on 9 June, Birmingham Airport has had to remove around 1.5 tonnes of liquids, pastes and gels every day to make sure that customers comply with the Government regulations.
