Domus III hangar Farnborough Airport

In response to growing demand for premium hangar space, Farnborough Airport has unveiled its state-of-the-art 175,000 sq ft hangar, Domus III, which it describes as the most “technically advanced and sustainable hangar facility of its kind”.

Farnborough partnered with construction firm McLaughlin & Harvey and architecture firm Gebler Tooth on the design and build of the hangar, which marked one of the largest private inward investments (£55 million) into the local area for a number of years.

The unveiling of Domus III increases the airport’s overall hangar capacity by more than 70 per cent and features a striking 300-metre-long, four-bay hangar. The development, which was delivered on time and in budget 18 months after breaking ground, also includes increased apron space, assisting the airport’s screening and parking requirements.

Simon Geere, CEO at Farnborough Airport, said: “Domus III represents a monumental leap forward in aviation hangar technology, setting new standards in the industry with a state-of-the-art facility that not only cements Farnborough Airport’s position as London and the South East’s premier hub for air connectivity, but also reflects our commitment to drive environmental performance across every part of our business.”

The hangar’s sustainability features include a fully intelligent lighting system incorporating daylight dimming to ensure the airport makes the most and best efficient use of electricity on site and translucent automated doors that stretch the entire length of the building. The large unhindered acccess provided by the door design improves aircraft manoeuvrability, helping to mitigate unnecessary emissions from aircraft handling activities. There is also a 280-metre-long symphonic rainwater harvesting system, eco-friendly heating systems and a fully integrated building control and energy monitoring system to minimise operational an in-use energy consumption.

Centrally located adjacent to the airport’s two main taxiways , the hangar has the flexibility to accommodate several large aircraft such as the Global 7500 and the next generation of business jets including the Dassault Falcon 10X and Gulfstream G700.
